When Not to Use a Fabric Conditioner

While it is a good idea to add a fabric conditioner to the washing load along with the laundry detergent, a few types of fabrics cannot be treated with a fabric conditioner. If the load contains your workout clothes, using a fabric softener is a strict no-no. Your workout clothes are made from fabrics that push out moisture so that they dry faster. A fabric conditioner will clog the pores of such materials and reduce their sweat absorption capacity. Fabric conditioners are also known to affect the water absorption abilities of towels, microfibre cloth and terry cloth. So avoid using a fabric softener when washing your towels and kitchen rugs.

How to Use a Fabric Conditioner

1) When You are Handwashing Your Clothes

Read the product label to know how much of the fabric conditioner you need to use. Add the said amount to a bucket of water. After rinsing off the detergent solution from your clothes, soak them in the conditioner solution for 5 minutes. Rinse with plain water and remove excess moisture. Now, hang your clothes to dry.

2) When You are Washing Your Clothes in Fully Automatic Washing Machine

In most automatic washing machines, you need to add the fabric softener in a separated compartment of your detergent dispenser. However, remember that the location of this compartment may vary from machine to machine. We suggest you to check the product manual to understand the location of the fabric softener’s compartment. A fabric softener generally comes in liquid form. You also get a measuring cap with it which makes it easier to measure the amount required. It may also come in a sachet form. Check the instructions on the pack to know the correct amount to be used.

3) When You are Washing Your Clothes in Semi-Automatic Machine

For a semi-automatic machine, you need to add the correct amount of fabric conditioner to the last rinse.

Fabric conditioner can make your clothes smell clean and fresh – but remember to follow the directions on the label when you are using it. If you use too much, it won’t have the same effect.

Avoid direct contact. Never allow the fabric softener to come in direct contact with your clothes, as it can cause stains.
