Giving a warm welcome to summer means bidding goodbye to your winter clothes. It’s time to pack those cosy woollen sweaters and cardigans, but you need to be extra careful about how you do it. Wool is a delicate fabric and needs more care. Oils and odours accumulated on woollen clothes can attract moths and cause damage.
We’ve compiled some easy and effective measures you can take before storing your clothes.
Step 1: Wash Them
It’s important to wash your woollen clothes before storing them. Check the wash care label for suggestions. If it’s not descriptive, it’s best to hand-wash your woollens using a mild detergent. If you choose to machine-wash your woollen sweaters and other garments, wash them on the ‘wool setting’ if the option is available. As an alternative, you can wash your clothes on a gentle setting using a cold-water cycle. In both cases, it’s best to use a mild detergent, as wool is a delicate material. You can also add ½ cup of fabric softener to keep your woollens fresh and soft.
Step 2: Towel-Dry Them
After washing them, don’t dry your woollen clothes on hangers. Wool absorbs water and this could weigh down the garment when it is hung. Place a clean towel on a flat surface and lay your garment on it. Carefully roll the towel while gently pressing down for it to absorb water. When this is done, unwrap the towel and take out the garments. Now, lay another clean towel on a flat surface, place the garments again on this fresh towel and allow them to air-dry. This is the best way to dry woollen clothes.

Step 3: Store in Airtight Containers
Once your woollen clothes are dry, pack them in airtight containers and put them away in your cupboard. You can also store your woollens along with fresh lavender flower petals to repel moths.
