Cleaning your motorcycle periodically helps maintain its potential and extend its life.
Daily usage can accumulate stubborn stains and caked-on dirt on various parts of your motorcycle. We know it can be tricky to understand the right way of cleaning your motorcycle at home, however, in this article, we have come up with a systematic way of doing so.
Before starting to clean your motorcycle, allow it to cool down completely.
Here’s how to clean your motorcycle at home.
Ingredients to Keep Handy:
a) 1 Bucket of water
b) 1 Empty bucket
c) Sponges
d) Cotton cloth
e) Cleaning brushes
f) Degreaser
g) Hose
h) Old toothbrush
i) Microfibre cloth
Step 1: Clean the Chain
Start by cleaning the grease and grime off your motorcycle’s chain first. This will keep the dirt and grease from spreading onto other parts while cleaning the rest of your motorcycle. Apply a commercial degreaser on the chain as directed on the pack. Allow it to settle for 5-10 minutes and then clean with a cotton cloth. You may repeat the process once again to remove any leftover dirt. Once you have cleaned it, apply a lubricant to restore any oil which may have been removed while cleaning.
Step 2: Clean the Nooks and Crannies
Now, move onto cleaning the corners of your motorcycle. Remember to skip cleaning
any chrome parts in this step; solely focus on the corners. Take a bowl of water and add 1 tsp. of dishwashing liquid in it. Dip an old toothbrush in this solution and gently scrub with it. You can also spray the degreaser for stubborn gunk build up and clean with a toothbrush. Then, wipe it with a damp cotton cloth.
Step 3: Clean the Wheels
Wash your wheels with soapy water. Mix 1-2 tbsp. of dishwashing liquid in 1 bucket of water. Using a cotton cloth, rub and rinse away the dirt. Repeat the step once again if needed.
Step 4: Wash the Body with Hose
Use a hose to wash the body of your bike. This will help loosen any dirt build up and simplify your further cleaning process. Remember to keep the pressure of your hose light as high pressure can damage the paint and finish of your bike. If you still find any traces of dirt and dust, repeat the washing step once again.
Step 5: Wipe with a Sponge or Cotton Cloth
Now, use a cotton cloth or a sponge dipped in a bucket of cold water to take off the
loosened dirt. Keep refreshing the cloth or sponge as it gets dirty.
Step 6: Wipe Off Excess Water
Now, take a clean microfibre cloth and wipe away the moisture completely. Allow your
bike to air-dry completely.
To clean your motorcycle’s keys you can use Nature Protect Germ Kill Spray. It is anti-viral and anti-bacterial and can be used on motorcycle keys and directly on your hands.
Once your motorcycle is cleaned, apply a wax to protect its finish. Follow the instructions on the pack and use as directed. And there you have it! Now you know how to clean and maintain your motorcycle all by yourself.
Key Step:
To ensure your motorcycle runs smoothly, clean it on a regular basis. For example, your motorcycle’s chain can catch dirt and grime if you allow it to build up. Use a commercial cleaning degreaser to remove build-ups and oily residues on chains.
