Ingredients to Keep Handy:

a) Nail polish remover

b) Liquid detergent

c) Paper towel

d) Towel

  1. Step 1: Blot the Stain

Remove as much of the nail paint from the fabric as you can using paper towel or a cleaning cloth. Remember blot, do not scrub. Vigorous scrubbing will only spread the stain further.

  2. Step 2: Read the Clothing Care Label

Before taking any action, you must read the manufacturer’s instructions. Dry Clean Only clothing items cannot be treated at home. Applying nail paint remover on a garment that contains acetate, triacetate or modacrylic will ruin it forever. Only washable garments can be treated for the stains at home.

  3. Step 3: Treat the Stain

Run a patch test of the remover on an inconspicuous area of the fabric to ensure compatibility. Once you are satisfied of the fabric’s endurance to nail polish remover, apply it on the stained area of the fabric. Dab the stains with a clean towel. Work from outside towards the inside. Keep at it until all the stain is lifted off the fabric.

  4. Step 4: Soak in Cold Water

Once the stains have completely disappeared, soak the garment in cold water for 10 minutes to get rid of any nail polish residue.

  5. Step 5: Launder as Usual

Wash your clothing items as per the instructions on the care label. If you prefer to wash your clothes in a washing machine, you can use Surf Excel Matic Liquid, which is specially formulated for washing machines and is easily available in the market. However, if your garment needs hand washing, you can use a detergent powder such as Surf Excel Easy Wash. It helps remove stains and is easily available in the market.

If you lack patience to sit in one place and wait for the nail paint to dry, you can opt for a quick dry variant. However, applying nail paint is a messy business. Accidental spills are somewhat mandatory. The fear of stains is no reason to not paint your nails in those lovely pop colours.

Act fast. When it comes to removing nail paint stains from your clothes, time is of the essence. The faster you act, the easier your cleaning will be.
