Mould growth can be easily avoided if you clean your fridge at least once a month. Ensure that your fridge is not overstocked and keep removing items that have crossed their expiry date or gone bad. In case of an accidental spill, wipe the surface with a damp washcloth immediately. Leaving the stain untreated will make your fridge smell bad and can also lead to the growth of mould.

A healthy kitchen needs a mould-free fridge. Use the steps given below for efficient cleaning.

Ingredients to Keep Handy:

a) Bucket of warm water

b) Vinegar

c) Sponge

d) Damp cloth

e) Dishwashing liquid

f) Kitchen cleaner

  1. Step 1: Unplug the Fridge

Safety first, always. Unplug your refrigerator from the main switch, but make sure you defrost your freezer first. Take out the all food items and keep them on the kitchen platform. Discard the food that has gone bad or expired. Remove the shelves and trays from your fridge and keep them in the kitchen sink.

  2. Step 2: Inspect the Fridge Shelves

Carefully inspect the fridge shelves and door to ensure there is no mould or mildew. If you spot mould growth, immerse the shelves in a bucket of warm water and add 2 cups of vinegar, which has disinfecting qualities and kills the mould right away.

After treating the shelves with vinegar, wash them with an effective dishwashing liquid. You may try using Vim Dishwash Gel for this as it is easily available in the market.

  3. Step 3: Wipe with Vinegar or Fridge Cleaner

Wipe the refrigerator door, the sides and the floor with a sponge soaked in vinegar. It will kill the mould and keep your fridge smelling fresh. To remove stains, wipe off the surfaces with a sponge soaked in soapy water. Rinse off the soapy layer with a damp washcloth. You can clean your kitchen shelves with a kitchen cleaner like Cif Kitchen Cleaner. Check the pack to understand the correct usage instructions. Finally, buff with a clean towel to get rid of excess moisture.

  4. Step 4: Prevent Mould Growth

To prevent the growth of mould in your refrigerator, inspect the content on a regular basis. Check and discard any outdated items or food items which are going bad. Use up perishable food items first. You can also place a bowl of baking soda in a corner of your fridge. This helps absorbing any odour. You may change the bowl of baking soda once in 2 or 3 months.

Your fridge is now mould-free and stain-free!
