Food crumbs getting stuck in the zippers or the lining of your child’s school lunch bag is a common sight. So, it is essential to clean and wash the lunch bag at least twice a month. Ensure that you get to every corner and crevice of the lunch bag by following these steps.
Step 1: Read the Label
Read the manufacturer’s care instructions on the label. Most good quality lunch bags can be machine-washed. However, it is always a good idea to double check.
Step 2: Pre-treat the Stains
Take 1 tsp. of baking soda and add a few drops of water to form a thick paste. Now, apply this paste on the stains and let it rest for 5 minutes. Then, rinse with cold water.

Step 3: Wash the Bag
If the label says that you can machine-wash your lunch bag, zip it up and toss it in the washing machine. Use mild detergent with cold water and run the machine on a gentle cycle. Do not use the dryer.
However, if you decide to hand-wash the lunch bag, mix 1 tsp. of mild detergent in a bowl of warm water. Now, soak a soft sponge in the solution and gently scrub the lunch bag. Use an old toothbrush to remove food particles from the zippers. Rinse with plain water and hang it out to dry.
Step 4: Deodorise the Bag
If there is still a lingering foul odour from your child’s lunch bag, pour ½ a cup of baking soda inside the bag and leave it overnight. Next morning, remove the baking soda and wipe the bag clean with a dry cotton cloth.
Follow our step-by-step instructions to clean your child’s lunch bag. Now it’s time to pack a healthy, tasty lunch!
